TREŚĆ: Pokaż informacje o treści pozycji >>In 1980, the Polish National Alliance of the United States of North America, the PNA, celebrated its one hundredth anniversary. Founded in Philadelphia and headquartered in Chicago, the PNA has grown from a tiny federation of immigrant societies into the eighth largest fraternal insurance association in the country. With 300.000 members and nearly $200 million in assets, it also ranks as the largest of the ethnically-based fraternals. Indeed, during its first one hundred years more than 1.2 million persons belonged to the PNA, making it the greatest of all Polish ethnic mass movements as well.
This study presents the history of the PNA during its first one hundred years and goes on to cover the dramatic events in the early 1980s, when the fraternal entered its second century of operation in service to Americans of Polish heritage. But the PNA story cannot be told only in terms of its steady growth as an insurance provider. Founded primarily for patriotic purposes, it sought to advance two causes of great significance to the immigrant Poles who flooded into this country in the decades following the Civil War. One of these centered upon uniting the immigrants in support of partitioned Poland`s struggle to regain its national independence. The other focused upon the creation of programs to aid the immigrants and their children in bettering their economic and social conditions in the new homeland. Throughout its existence, the PNA has remained true to both these aims; in the process it has done much to preserve a strong sense of ethnic consciousness among successive generations of Americans of Polish heritage.
In this work will be found the record of PNA achievements in many areas; at the same time this history frankly describes the frequently turbulent internal struggles between powerful factions with competing visions about the fraternal and its relations toward Poland and America. These sometimes bitter conflicts for control over the PNA were waged not only in its lodge halls and national conventions, but in the press and even in the courts.
In sum, this work, based upon extensive research into PNA archives and the Polish American press along with interviews with fraternal leaders, is a study of organized ethnic activism, commitment to service and political conflict. As such, it should provide readers with fresh insights into the meaning of the Polish American experience and the dimensions of ethnic pluralism in the United States. |
